I received a copy of this book as a gift a year ago. I thought it was a hard read since it's really a thick book (about a thousand pages) but once you get started, you just can't stop! Tolkien has a great imagination and an exceptional skill in storytelling and describing the things that goes on in his head. This edition of the book is great, it worked for me, although I haven't seen the other editions.
A movie of the first book is coming out in December. I'm quite excited about it. I hope it's as good as the book so as not to disappoint Tolkien fans. This book is actually a one volume edition of the 3 book-single-novel, just like what Stephen King did on his "Green Mile", he just took it a bit further by making 7(?) installments of his. Contrary to what everybody is saying, this book is not at all a trilogy, you can't read one book and then just stop, you'll be drifting in space if you do that!
I highly recommend this to everyone, fantasy or non fantasy lovers! I bought 2 copies of this book from Amazon as a gift to my friends!

いわずと知れた、映画「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」の原作です。この作品は他のエディションでも出版されていますが、このエディションがおすすめです。まずこの大きさ。B5番と思われる大きさで、分厚く、板表紙もまさに板、といった感じで分厚いし硬いんです。そして、重い……。でもこの感じが良いんです。ハマります。
勿論内容も素晴らしい!!読み始めたら止まることができず、私は夜通し読んでいました。とにかくそのくらい人を引き込む力のある作品です。これ以上の作品はないでしょう。訳も素晴らしく、外国語で書かれたのを翻訳したものにもかかわらず、「日本人でよかった」と思ってしまいました。
トールキン氏のストーリーそのものにしても、訳にしても現代では失われてしまったレトリックにお!!にかかることができます。そのために、この作品に漂う失われる運命にあるものの喪失の悲しみがいっそう際立っています。そして現代の作品とは一線を画しているからこそ、神話性が高まっているのでしょう。

This is easily, along with The Price of Immortality, is one of if not the best book I have ever read. When I received this book as a gift, I was horrified at the sheer length of it. I am so glad that I read it. I now enjoy reading more than I ever have in my entire life and will continue to do so thanks to J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy. I can't wait until the films are released since they actually follow the storyline of the book closely and are really close to Tolkien's vision. As for Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings easily bests it. There is no comparison. I will easily read The Lord of the Rings at least once every year and even though Harry Potter is good, I don't think I will read them again!!
Recomendations, The Price of Immortality is a very great read
